How an engine works

Suck,Squeeze,bang, and blow

It’s not rude, it’s the four strokes of a typical car engine and it goes a little like this . . .

Suck

The start of the cycle begins with the piston moving down from it’s maximum position, the intake valves open and the piston sucks in the fuel air mixture into the cylinder. As the piston reaches the bottom of the cylinder the intake valve closes, sealing the cylinder once again.

Squeeze

With the cylinder sealed and the piston returning to the top of the cylinder the gases inside are squeezed together. Their pressure and temperature rise until the piston reaches the very top.

Bang

The spark plug fires an electrical ark across the air gap and ignites the gases inside the cylinder . This produces a vast increase in pressure which drives the piston down to the bottom of the cylinder.

Blow

As the cylinder begins to climb once again to the top, the exhaust valve opens allowing the now spent gases to exit the cylinder before shutting again as the piston reaches the top. Ready for the whole sequence to begin again.
